Mossink's dissertation (MSc Economics – Behavioural Economics and Game Theory) investigated whether interaction with artificial intelligence (AI) influences how humans judge a text. To analyse this, he let human agents compete in a writing competition with an AI agent. 200 people then judged the poems by the human and AI authors. One of his findings is that humans can’t differentiate reliably between the authors.

The jury, consisting of Prof. Sander Onderstal, Dr Ruta Ruzeviciute, Prof. Joep Sonnemans and Prof. Marc Salomon, awarded the prize to Mossink for his 'research relevance and innovative and original research method'. The other nominees were Daan Arends (Business Administration Strategy track), Garyn Tan (Economics), Simone Korrel and Kim van Asten (both from the Business Economics Neuroeconomics track).

About the award

The H.K. Nieuwenhuis thesis award is named after Herman Karel Nieuwenhuis, who in 1929 was the first Economics student at the University of Amsterdam to graduate cum laude. This thesis award was created to stimulate academic study in the field of economics and business.
